Lara Merrett: Casus Fortuitus

Lara Merrett's new body of work on show at Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne, until 3 September, expands the traditional notion of painting on a stretched canvas. Originating from the drop sheets the artist had in her studio, these works, made from several large sheets of canvas sewn together, hang from the gallery ceiling.

The exhibition title is a Latin term used in the legal system to refer to an inevitable accident; it also refers to the way Merrett applies paint and the accidental way colours, stains and spills occur through the painting process.
